The 1G Protector 612 is designed for both active and passive monitoring tools. Twelve Gigabit fixed media ports are available for accessing and redirecting traffic from up to six networks to multiple inline monitoring and/or security tools, and provide fail-open loss of power protection. The other four 1G fixed media ports and eight 1G SFP ports allow for flexible I/O configuration, which can be for inline tools, passive tools, Span or passive Inline inputs, or even active inline inputs with just fail-closed loss of power protection. As an extension of the Distributed Traffic Capture System (DTCS) family of products, users also have complete control over how Protector, operating fully at layers 1 and 2, refines and delivers traffic to their selected active and passive monitoring tools with VSS' Base and Protector feature sets.

Positive health check packets test the health and state of the monitoring appliance while Negative health check packets verify software state of the active tool.
